I fell in love with this French animated movie rather fast. It all started when I saw these breathtakingly beautiful visual development images for the movie floating about on the webs. Curious and drawn to what I saw, I later watched the English version.
What I love the most is the colourful scenery and playful designs. One can tell a lot of love went into the creation of this movie. The characters are all lovable, and the animation is great (not quite Pixar standard, but still). On top of it all is a sublime soundtrack with catchy songs - best enjoyed in French with –M- voicing the title character.
After further inspecting the storyline, one can find a lot of flaws. There’s hardly any character development going on, and some characters seem very flat. The storyline itself could have been rearranged and extended to make room for development. Sadly, the animation studio ran out of funds for that.

Un Monstre á Paris (A Monster in Paris) is meant for family entertainment, but if you just look a little deeper, this adorable tale about acceptance could have turned into a dark thriller really fast. Admittedly, I kind of fancy that idea.
Since the story and characters are vaguely based on The Phantom of the Opera, I wanted to accentuate some of its darker elements. For that I used the Phantom movie poster as an inspiration. I chose a more realistic style, which occasionally gave me a headache because of tricky angles and proportions.
For all of you romantics; imagine them singing "All I Ask of You", but with switched lines. (Personally I see their relationship as either close friends or mother/adopted child.)
Lastly, I would recommend seeing this movie if you don't mind a more relaxed pace and want something to brighten your day
