"Colonel Walter was shocked when he learned from the Nile Copper African elephants turning hostile So he built these wonderful automaton blokes And a very big steam powered giraffe what smokes" - Brass Goggles
It's extremely unusual for me to make fan art, and when it happens it's gonna be for a very good reason. This is a humble tribute to a very special musical pantomime troupe which has hijacked my heart and mind since I first heard of them in July '12.
They are Steam Powered Giraffe, a vaudeville/cabaret-influenced band consisting of three antique automatons and three humans. The history of the robots goes back to 1896 when they were built by Colonel Peter A. Walter who programmed them to sing and perform music with the ambition to impress and win the heart of Delilah Moreau, a fellow Cavalcadian chemist. But things went horribly wrong. After a series of unfortunate events the peaceful automatons had to gear up and play the grim role as war machines. To find out what happened; read the touching story about love, burning rivalry, remarkable discoveries and grinding gears: [link] ---
All of the band members are absolutely adorable individuals and highly skilled at what they do. It's not hard to fall in love with them and their music, and their hilarious skits and bantering on stage will surely make you laugh, too.
Now when the worst waves of my fangirl-craze have subsided, I can step back and truly admire the work they put into their art. Because it is art.
So how do you find out more about this lovely Steam Man Band? Well, you can always: visit their Official Website (Also on Facebook and Tumblr) YouTube channel - this song is a good starter. Your heart will melt. And once you are familiar with their songs, then you ought to see what these robots can do live. I've put together a video playlist with a variety of old busking classics and newer performances. You can even see a full show if you like. Edit: now there's 11 hours of shenanigans to watch! ---------------------------
Gosh, I've been talking a lot without even mentioning my own artwork. O_o I've seen so many fabulous fan arts featuring the robots' upgraded appearances, but very few showing them fitted for antique clockwork war (that is not true anymore). I tried to stay true to the original concepts (below) while still incorporating my own ideas. Some details might be wrong, but I'm fine with that. I hope you are too.
i am flabbergasted... this is so epically amazing, that I hardly have the words for it! excellent job, my friend!
I CANT EVEN
WOAH.
Everything is so detailed~
As long it is merely a robot war!
